The prestigious title was granted at a special ceremony held in the council Chamber at Penallta House, Ystrad Mynach on 20th May, 2009.
The Freedom of the Borough is the highest accolade that the council can grant and is awarded for outstanding services to, or achievement associated with, the Caerphilly County Borough. Calzaghe was nominated by Cllr Allan Pritchard with unanimous support from all councillors.
"Being the first person to receive this award is a great honour and it has totally blown me away," said Calzaghe. "The scroll will take pride of place in my home and I would like to thank the council from the bottom of my heart for recognising me in this way."
Mayor, Cllr John Evans said, "Joe is an extremely worthy recipient of this prestigious honour. Not only is this down to his outstanding achievements within the boxing ring and his charity work, but also the way in which he is an excellent role model for so many youngsters."
